Manager, Development & Communications (Full time, exempt, remote)
You are a team player who is passionate about addressing racial, social, and economic injustice and eager to help an organization grow and scale. You are a well-rounded communicator, detail-oriented, and most satisfied when your work has deep, meaningful impact. You have non-profit development and communications experience, and are excited to take on new tasks and responsibilities.
You are adept at managing your own share of responsibility and will work independently on a mix of tasks, ranging from clerical to creative. You are a skilled communicator both in writing and verbally. You are flexible, self-directed, and can take both direction and initiative at the appropriate times. You are a problem solver who takes a hands-on approach to challenges and opportunities, and are skilled at building processes and systems. You are adept at managing deadlines and are able to work with a variety of tech tools to organize and complete your work.
You are comfortable with shared responsibility and are comfortable in a collaborative and diverse work environment, often working across time zones. You will have the support of teammates and a manager who look out for you and want you to succeed.
This position is full-time and reports to Defy’s National Director of Development. This is a remote position. If located near a Defy office (Los Angeles, Oakland, Chicago, New York), the position would be in the office a minimum of one day per week. In all other locations, the position will be fully remote.
Responsibilities
Development & Grant Writing Responsibilities (70%):
- Prepare and submit grant applications on behalf of Defy including grant writing and copy editing
- Assist in researching new funding sources including grants and corporate partners
- Assist in grant tracking and reporting, collaborating across departments to ensure consistency of language and processes
- Manage gift processing including data entry and annual tax receipt distribution
- Become an expert in Defy’s CRM (customer relationship management) database, EveryAction, to support the organization’s database management and data
- Support development communication, acknowledgement, and stewardship efforts
- Support Defy’s national team with fundraising campaigns such as the virtual silent auction
- Collaborate with the National Director of Development on Defy’s development strategy including moves management, fundraising campaigns, creation of streamlined processes, and data management
- Collaborate with national and regional leadership to meet the fundraising goals of the organization
- Additional development administrative support tasks as needed
Marketing & Communications Responsibilities (30%):
- Manage Defy’s social media channels and accounts including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and others as need
- Prepare posts for Defy’s social media channels, sourcing content from the Defy team
- Organize and implement a national social media and communications calendar
- Draft content for digital communications such as newsletters, website, and other marketing collateral
- Assist in the creation of collateral such as Defy’s Annual Report
- Collaborate with national and regional leadership to meet the goals of the organization
Requirements:
- At least 3 years of experience in development and fundraising
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience preferred
- Strong written and verbal skills, including writing and editing, for a diverse audience
- Proficiency with Google Suites and Microsoft Office is essential

Compensation
- Annual salary of $65,000
- Comprehensive health benefits
