We are pleased to share this interview with Radiant Raymond, CEO of Waggy World, Defy graduate (January 2023), and current peer facilitator at Correctional Training Facility in California! Raymond spoke with Defy staff member Scott about what he's been doing since he graduated Defy's in-prison program, CEO of Your New Life.
Question: What are you doing now (classes, projects, self-study, groups, etc.) and how does it connect to your learning at Defy?
I’m currently a Peer Literacy Mentor aka GED, HS tutor. I work one-on-one with student inmates who aspire to obtain high education. The attitude and mindset needed in my assignment is closely related to the ideas and philosophy of Defy. Being of service, helping facilitate growth, cultivating different/richer perspectives. I also facilitate Alternative to Violence Project, a group specializing in conflict resolution tactics promoting positive outcomes.
Question: What learning or takeaway (one or more) from Defy has/have been most influential to you in your life?
I’ve learned how to believe in myself and abilities all over again. I have come to believe that failure breeds character as long as I am always learning from failure not to repeat it. Another major takeaway has been the reestablishing of my humane side, the ability to judge people with a compassionate and understanding heart. Lastly, I was moved by the large amount of support I was given throughout my journey developing my business idea, Waggy World.
