In 2023, while navigating reentry in Illinois, Kieth fortuitously discovered his true calling in social services. This reentry journey began at Kewanee Life Skills Reentry Center, where he enrolled in Defy’s CEO of Your New Life (CEO YNL) program. Through CEO YNL, Keith received personal development, career readiness, and entrepreneurship training that would eventually give him the confidence to face life after prison. Soon after finishing the program, having served nearly ten years, Keith came home in October 2023.
Keith said, “taking Defy’s entrepreneur class was a game changer for me. It opened my eyes to new possibilities, gave me the confidence to take risks, and taught me how to turn ideas into action. Beyond business skills, it helped me think creatively, solve problems and see opportunities where I once saw obstacles. This class didn’t just teach me about entrepreneurship–it showed me how to take control of my future.”
Keith was determined to find meaningful employment as soon as possible, so once he was released, he connected with Defy Illinois Career and Reentry Manager Malaki Krayton for continuing resource and job placement support. During his job search, he began volunteering locally distributing food to those experiencing homelessness—this moment deepened his commitment to helping others. It was at this point he realized the extent of his passion for the field. His passion for service didn’t go unnoticed, and thanks to a partnership between Defy and Phalanx Family Services, Keith secured a full-time position as the Re-Entry Programs Coordinator at Phalanx.
Keith has thrived in his role and is known for his extraordinary professionalism, etiquette, and attention to detail. In April 2024, during Second Chance Month, he hosted his very first Reentry Conference—an achievement that highlights his growing influence and leadership in the field.
Keith’s personal life also continues to flourish. Recently engaged to his childhood sweetheart, he’s now focused on building a future together. To that end, he’s back in school, determined to complete his bachelor's degree in social services.
Meanwhile, Keith’s role and impact in the Chicago community is felt by those he steadfastly supports. Through his role at Phalanx, Keith acts as a key partner to Defy in providing wraparound services for individuals returning to the South Side of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, playing a vital role in their successful reintegration.
